What is diarrhea?

Diarrhea is defined as watery, loose bowel movements that typically occur more often than regular bowel movements. Experiencing loose stools three times a day or more puts it in the category of diarrhea. Usually, diarrhea lasts only briefly, but persistent or ongoing bouts can signal a much more serious root cause. Diarrhea can occasionally be treated with home remedies. The most important thing one can do when having diarrhea is to consume plenty of fluids to replace the fluids lost during watery bowel movements. You can also incorporate bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast into your diet. If you believe you have a virus or bacteria, antibiotics or antivirals might be prescribed. You can also use over-the-counter medications with your physician’s supervision. However, several diseases, conditions, and cancers manifest themselves as diarrhea. Some such conditions include but are not limited to colon cancer, Crohn's disease, and irritable bowel syndrome. Conditions such as these are why it is important not to self-diagnose but to consult a specialist if severe diarrhea occurs. Please know that you are not alone, and you can get help for diarrhea in Connecticut. You can locate a local gastrointestinal provider near you at one of our Connecticut GI locations.

What causes diarrhea?

Diarrhea is a generally common condition. Nearly all of us have suffered from loose or watery bowel movements as a result of eating some bad food, during stressful times in our lives, or after taking a new medication. But diarrhea can, in some cases, tell you that something more serious is going on within your body. Here is a list of possible habits or conditions that can precipitate diarrhea:

  • Overactive thyroid
  • Radiation therapy
  • Viruses
  • Difficulty digesting fructose
  • Runner’s diarrhea
  • Abuse of laxatives
  • Artificial sweeteners in your diet
  • Lactose intolerance
  • Surgery (sometimes surgery to remove the gallbladder or some abdominal surgeries can cause diarrhea)
  • Some cancers
  • Malabsorption (trouble absorbing certain nutrients)
  • Abuse of alcohol
  • Parasites or bacteria from contaminated food or water

At what point should I visit a gastroenterologist for diarrhea?

If your diarrhea occurs frequently, reach out to a gastrointestinal specialist at your nearest Connecticut GI location as soon as possible. A few signs of severe diarrhea can include:

  • Diarrhea in conjunction with fever
  • Diarrhea that lasts more than two days
  • Dark urine and diarrhea
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Vomiting, in addition to diarrhea
  • Diarrhea post-travel to a foreign country

If any of these issues appear, it is important that you seek professional assistance. It is always better to err on the side of caution. If you think you should consult with a gastroenterologist concerning diarrhea, please do not hesitate to do so. Our specialists can provide the treatment you seek for diarrhea in Connecticut.

This was my 4th or 5th colonoscopy performed by Dr. Frese, and as with all the previous procedures, he and his staff were excellent. He always greets you before the anesthesia for any question you might have, sees you in recovery and calls a couple days after the procedure to go over results if polyps were removed. The staff at the facility are also all professional, friendly, respectful and helpful throughout the preparation and day of the procedure.
